How to Start a Clothing Line

Ever heard of Obey and Supreme? They are all clothing lines that started very little and are now among the top notch. Ever wondered how these guys made it among the big ones like Adidas and Gucci? I’ll show you today some ways you can also make it to the top with your own clothing line. First of all, I’m going to tell you the story of Obey and how she made it big.

You see Obey didn’t just start as a famous tshirt designer; it started as a street artist in 2001 and was founded by street artist Shepard Fairey as part of his political activism work. He started incorporating political and social ideas that are seen as provocative into his designs which became very popular among individuals. Later Obey became a popular Tshirt clothing line and many artists used it as a tee design a lot. After this, he started designing other clothes such as women’s dresses, men’s trousers and others.

Now back to our topic; how to start a clothing line. I’ve listed some basic steps below which you can also follow to get yourself among the top notch. Do share after reading.

• Research Your Idea

In order to begin you’re your journey to stardom get the right design—something that sells and it should be unique. It should stand out and catch a person’s eye as soon as they see it. At the same time; it should be simple. Keep in mind; simple always wins.

Search what people are buying the most and what other people in your niche are doing and the type of designs they are making — this will enable you get the do something unique and at the same time not go so astray from what is in demand . Once you get an idea of what design or idea to portray, then you are the right path.

•  Choose the right Clothing Line

Okay so now you have your idea. What next is to decide whether you will advertise just cloth with the design on it or to promote the design first and when popular, convert it into a clothing Line. Either ways, you still have to choose a right cloth whether T shirts, dresses, caps, tanks or any other you want. For starters, I say use T shirts because hey…tees are tees and they are so in demand. Also, stick to dark colored tees. People buy them the most than white tees.  You can easily start by joining online T shirt printing sites like redbubble and Teespring—I prefer Teespring. You just upload the design and advertise. They do the printing, shipping and take care of payment.

• Ways to Promote

Just as said earlier, Obey did not just start as clothing line but as a street art and later became popular. You can also promote your clothing line by printing and promoting the cloth itself or promoting the design like Shepard Fairey did! Maybe you wouldn’t be doing street art but hey… why go to the street and use so much energy when you’ve got the internet and social media right on your PC or mobile device. 

You can use Facebook and instagram ads, pinterest, instagram and twitter. The aforementioned pages are the most used and Pinterest works best for me. I drive so much traffic to my website without even adding any description to pin. It also costs nothing to get engagements on your instagram post—Just use not more than 30 hashtags which has most engagements per post and voila! You will get so much engagements, likes and follows!

But before going social…wait…save the guns! You will need a website! hmmmn…this is the tricky part …what happens if you don’t have the starting capital for hosting, domain etc… Just use a blog! Google’s blogger is so easy to use. Just start a blog today and you’ll be shiney…sorry… meant to say soaring! Google recently introduced new theme such as the solo theme which looks so classy and website-like than blog like. Try it today.
